About the breed:
The Gypsy Vanner Horse is a beautiful and rare new breed of horse. They are accepted as a own breed only since 1996. The name originally means that these horses were meant to pull the wagons of the gypsy. These horses have been selectively bred over the past 50 years to create a kind of small Shire that was colourful (usually tobiano) enough to match the gypsyâ€s caravans. There is no exact known history of the Gypsy Cob. It is believed that the Gypsy Cobs are descended from a combination of Shires, Clydesdales, Friesians, and Dales Ponies with their origins in the United Kingdom and Ireland. These horses, bred by the Gypsies, are easily recognizable by their long, flowing manes and tails, and the profusion of feathers on their legs. Mainly the breeding of the Gypsy Banner takes place in the USA.
These are two books I bought about Gypsy Vanners, when I first got Aylish. The first one contains more general information, while the second one has absolutely stunning pictures of various horses from the breed.
